A challenge between two distinctive innovations in the electric car panorama. Hyundai Kona Electric VS Kia e-Niro, or a comparison between the “zero-emission cousins” of the Hyundai Motor Company group, strong with powerful electric motors combined with a considerable driving range advanced technologies.
For the two crossovers that boast an SUV style, let’s compare the top-of-the-range versions. That is the Long Range with a 64 kWh battery pack in the Excellence set-ups for Kona and Evolution for e-Niro.
DIMENSIONS AND INTERIOR
Hyundai Kona Electric has compact dimensions with a length of 4.18 meters and boasts a strong personality thanks to its muscular shapes and two-tone body color. The electric version plays on the very “electric” Ceramic Blue Two-Tone White color, therefore with a contrasting roof. The trunk has 322 liters, which becomes 1114, with the rear seats folded down.
The rims are in 17 “light alloy—total weight of the car 1.685 Kg. The passenger compartment itself is huge about the external dimensions, and the spaces are airy and comfortable.
The rich Excellence version, offered in combination with the 64 kWh battery pack, adds to the already rich standard equipment Full LED headlights, leather-covered seats, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, a head-up display, and front parking sensors. In addition to the navigator with 10.25 ”touchscreen display, top-level infotainment is guaranteed by Bluelink telematics services, the wireless charger for smartphones, and an 8-channel Krell Premium Sound System.

Kia e-Niro, compared to its cousin, has more generous dimensions with a length of 4.37 meters. With the late-2019 update, the Kia Niro’s understated look has gained some oomph, thanks to modifications in the front, which include “arrow” daytime running lights in the bumper.
The trunk has a volume of 324 liters, and with the rear seats folded down, it reaches 1,322 liters. The rims are 17 ” alloy with a diamond finish—the total weight of the car 1,737 Kg.
Thanks to the almost 20 cm more than the Kona, the interior is even more generous, and you can breathe a lot of space. In the welcoming passenger compartment, the finishes are very accurate, and the Kia Navigation System infotainment system with 10.25 ” touchscreen with UVO Connect and 7 ” digital supervision cluster is really the master. Really impactful.
The top of the range is represented by the Evolution version, which, in addition to the exclusive combination with the 64 kWh battery pack, is enriched with full LED headlights and heated and ventilated leather seats at the front driver seat equipped with electric adjustments and memory system.
The JBL premium audio system completes the equipment with 8 speakers and amplifiers. Some driver assistance technologies such as blind-spot monitoring system (BCW) and the monitoring system for vehicles approaching in reverse (RCCW).
ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE
Hyundai Kona Electric in the Long Range version is equipped with a powertrain with a 64 kWh battery. A true concentrate of power, which, in addition to offering a declared range of 484 km, thanks to the update of the Michelin Primacy 4 tires, thanks to the permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, can release 204 HP (150 kWh) and 395 Nm of torque. Equal 0-100km in 7.6 seconds with impressive thrust.
Exciting accelerations. The maximum speed of 167 Km / h and declared an average consumption of 15.4 kWh every 100 Km. The New version also benefits from recharging times reduced by 23% thanks to the new 10.5 kW three-phase charger.
The same performance is also recorded for the Kia e-Niro thanks to the latest generation electric powertrain. Therefore, we are talking about the most performing high-capacity 64 kWh lithium-ion battery capable, in the WLTP combined cycle, of a range of over 500 km thanks to the presence of Michelin Legacy 3 tires (now Kona Electric will also adopt them). The same 150 kW (204 hp) engine, with a 395 Nm torque, allows the Kia e-Niro to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in just 7.8 seconds.
HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC VS KIA E-NIRO, CONCLUSIONS AND PRICES
Hyundai Kona Electric vs Kia e-Niro clearly compares cars that share the same powertrain and, therefore, with similar performance. And we can safely confirm the declared autonomies. It goes over 500 km in the city, while on mixed routes, 450 km is guaranteed.
Charging times are currently charged on the Kia e-Niro side, which is longer than those of Kona. The new charging cable supplied by Hyundai actually shortens the time of a full charge to the columns (therefore, in three-phase).
We’re talking about an hour and a half difference in favor of Kona. Also, the greater weight of the e-Niro is felt. If the torque offers jet-like acceleration on the track for both, on the Kona, the perceived thrust is even more powerful.
On the other hand, the Kia e-Niro is more stable thanks to a greater mass and less “write” on the rear when you are “running” for the 0-100 sprint. Both Kona Electric and e-Niro Long Range, in fact, make a lot of fun for this devastating “electric” couple.
More points instead for Kia e-Niro interior side. The 7 “instrument display and the 10.25” touchscreen incorporated into the elegant dashboard make the difference. If for Kona Electric, interiors’ choice is more linked to an electric concept (colors and graphics), Kia for e-Niro has focused on greater elegance, giving a more premium interior. And those 20 cm more of the e-Niro can be seen in the spaces at the rear.
Where however, there are heated seats for passengers. Not a small gem. Praise to both Hyundai and Kia for the choice of audio systems linked to these top-of-the-range fittings. Both the Krell mounted on the Kona, and the JBL on the Kia e-Niro sound beautiful.
What to say about prices. We are talking about $37,190 for Kona Electric and $38,500 for Kia e-Niro. Are so many.
