2022 Ford Puma Hybrid Review: Specs, Price, Interior Features
The anticipation of driving the 2022 Ford Puma Hybrid was high. A big name for the X generation. Ford Puma, in the 1990s, was a small sports coupe that was highly sought after by young people of that era. That appreciation that could ride his reincarnation in a totally revised version. That of a compact crossover. Raised structure, sinuous and sporty lines, 4.20 meters long.
That segment is coveted by many big names in the automotive scene where the Blue Oval SUV will have to contend with rivals such as Volkswagen T-Roc, Hyundai Kona, and Peugeot 2008.
Exterior & Interior
Undoubtedly the aesthetic aspect counts. Let’s say right away how surprised we were to perceive a car that looks bigger in real life than in photos and videos.
The step of 259 cm, looking at it in profile, stands out. Thanks also to the deep ribs that characterize it and the very inclined rear pillars, which give it greater breadth and make it fascinating. The front is gritty, and the whole car shows a muscular character without falling into the tacky.
A technological Cabin. Ford worked very well on the instrumentation. The 12.3 ”digital dashboard dominates the dashboard with a series of captivating and pleasing graphics. During the car’s standby phase, once inside the passenger compartment, you are greeted by a short animation with a beam of lights on the screen. A puma then appears illuminated for a few seconds before showing the default dial-in blue color to indicate the “normal” driving status.
One of this crossover’s engaging features is the combination of the graphics setting with the driving modes. In fact, the Drive Modes technology allows the driver to set the accelerator, steering, and traction control parameters to modulate performance to different scenarios. For example, we have a green screen for driving in Eco mode and red in the Sport mode. All easily selectable with a special button placed at the height of the gearbox. In detail, the driving modes are Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery (low grip), and Trail (dirt road).
Spacious interiors with attention to detail. In addition to a high driving position and excellent visibility, the new Ford Puma includes semi-anatomical front seats (partially in leather) that are very soft in the seat and finished with materials of perceived elegance and quality.
The close space with SYNC 3 was also appreciated. Compared to the Ford Fiesta ST, the infotainment system is more easily reached by hand, which means faster menu execution and less distraction from the road.
Then, there are the essential keys for controlling voice commands and the audio system of the B&O system on the steering wheel.
Also of note is the wireless charging system for smartphones, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standards. The rear seats are equally comfortable and elegant, although the layout guarantees a perfect seat for only two people and possibly no higher than 175 cm.
2022 Ford Puma Hybrid Engine Specs & Test Drive
We drove the new Ford Puma for about 600 km on urban and extra-urban routes, with a higher percentage on the motorway section.
You can tell right away how confident Ford Puma instills, and the car gives a total feeling of control over every slightest smudge during a journey.
The ADAS ( Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), as in the new Ford Focus – a “new-gen” technology uses three radars, two cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. All these elements are linked to the new Ford Co-Pilot system.
The adaptive cruise control must be adjusted via the on-board computer; otherwise, it can sometimes be too invasive. Optionally it can be deactivated. On ADAS systems, a peculiarity of Ford is to grant free will. Also, present on the Puma of our test drive is the automatic parking system and the car access and keyless starting system.
Compared to other Ford’s 1.0 Ecoboost 3-cylinder, this one turned out to have a slightly harder clutch, while the shifting was smooth and rather fast when shifting.
The engine in acceleration can be a bit noisy, but a characteristic of the 3-cylinder to consider is always the engine’s typical sound.
The engine that finds its greatest thrust with second and third gears, where Ford Puma unloads remarkable grit. Especially in Sport mode, the 3-cylinder is “untied” and grants a gratifying torque and greater air.
As the braking system, soft pedal, modulated, and precise braking, there is no risk of jerks and sudden slowdowns. Well, the blind spot signal’s presence on the mirrors and top lighting with automatic high beams. Also, present the key to activate the control of the carriageway’s maintenance at the head of the turn signal switch.
In the ST Line-X set-up, the seats and steering wheel are heated, climate present but not b-zone, tinted rear windows, and a panoramic roof with double curtain (front and rear) front retractable by electric control.
The trunk is large and functional (401 liters for the hybrid versions), with the large cockpit, the famous Megabox80 liters, under the loading floor—an absolute novelty by Ford Puma.
2022 Ford Puma Hybrid Fuel Economy
Talk about consumption; it is right to make a premise. Mild-Hybrid propulsion is an economically advantageous solution, but purely in the city or on hilly roads.
During the passive phases, the starter/generator allows energy to be recovered and the battery to be recharged, ensuring the correct functioning of all the car’s electrical components. And on the Ford Puma, the on-board computer provides very precise data.
Both on the driving quality, returning percentage values on parameters evaluated by the electronic system (for example, adequate gear changes, speed, acceleration, ecosystem) and on how much the hybrid system was “efficient.”
Obviously, the more frequent the passive driving situations are and a 48V lithium-ion battery powers, the better the electric motor’s efficiency.
So the real advantage is when the greatest number of braking occurs to the electrical system’s advantage. The average consumption figure measured by the on-board computer at the end of our test was 7.9 liters per 100 km/h.
Which means 12.65km on a liter of fuel, far from the 17.9 claimed by the house. Driving in Sport mode rather than Eco, making little use of the hybrid system on motorway sections determines the potential of this light hybrid.
