2020 Volvo XC40 Review | Personal aesthetics, meticulous finishes and a modern and welcoming interior (even the trunk is ample) are among the main qualities of the Volvo XC40, a compact and fashionable SUV that does not renounce to functionality, it drives well and is really comfortable. The 2.0 biturbo diesel with 190 hp of the D4 we drove was brilliant and silent, also equipped with 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive: thanks to the bodywork high off the ground, dirt and snow do not worry. Between high and low the equipment, which offers many of the most advanced driver assistance systems (and others are available for a fee), but not accessories that you would expect to be included in the price in such an expensive car: for example the navigator, the Dab radio or the electrically liftable tailgate.

2020 Volvo XC40 Exterior & Dimensions – Compact & Good Quality

With its 443 cm in length, the Volvo XC40is the “smallest” of the Swedish brand’s SUVs. Based on a brand new platform, under the original shapes of the body it conceals a cozy passenger compartment also behind (it travels in five without too many sacrifices) and a trunk among the best in the class. The older sisters are also inspired by comfort, which is really high in all driving conditions; moreover, even without being a sports car (forcing the rhythm between the curves, the roll is noticeable) it has remarkable road qualities, especially if equipped with 19 “rims (optional instead of the 18” ones). The 2.0 turbodiesel of the D4 under test is the most powerful diesel engine (the other, that of the D3, has 150 hp instead of 190) and is combined only with the eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission and AWD four-wheel drive. The latter automatically distributes the torque between the two axes e,

The availability of the most advanced driver assistance systems, some of which are standard (such as automatic braking also active outside the city and able to identify pedestrians and cyclists, or the road sign recognition system), has contributed to the excellent evaluation obtained from the 2020 Volvo XC40 in the Euro NCAP crash tests (carried out in 2018): five stars accompanied by above average ratings in the various fields of analysis. As for the rest of the budget, however, even the “rich” Momentum requires paid supplements: for example for the navigator or for automatic door unlocking. If you choose the “base” to save money, you will still get full led headlights with automatic high beams but you will also forgo the automatic “climate” (there is the manual one), the rear distance sensors and the electrically foldable mirrors. As an alternative to purchasing, there are rental formulas with a monthly fee that also includes a Wi-Fi connection (otherwise for a fee) for the Volvo On Call remote assistance service.

2020 Volvo XC40 Interior

The Inside of the 2020 Volvo XC40 is airy, refined and above all modern, starting with the modern dashboard consisting of a configurable screen of 12.3 “(a bit small, however, the writing in the lower part). Also noteworthy is the multimedia system, whose 9 “vertical touch screen also allows you to control the” climate “(but for the basic functions the classic keys and knobs would be more practical). Too bad the navigator is extra, like the Dab radio and the powerful 600 watt Harman / Kardon hi-fi with 13 speakers; the Android Auto / Apple CarPlay connections are also available for a fee, in the Connect package together with the plate for wireless charging of the prepared mobile phones (placed near the small and elegant gear lever).

The raised and comfortable armchairs with extra charge can be upholstered in black, red, brown or beige leather (the latter can also be used for the lower part of the dashboard and for the felt, a bit rough, that covers the doors ); the electrical adjustments (except for the standard lumbar support) with memory are in the Power Seats package, together with the extendable seats. On board the 2020 Volvo XC40 the space is not lacking even behind, although the sofa, with a hard backrest in the center, best hosts only two people; if you buy the dual-zone “climate” (the standard one is single-zone) you will also get the vents for the rear passengers, in addition to the refrigeration of the drawer (small, but with document shelf) in front of the passenger. Still about air conditioning, there is the possibility of maintaining the temperature by running the system with the engine off (maximum for 40 minutes). Functional the drink holders and the two compartments (one of which with a spring cover, the other in the armrest) between the armchairs.

2020 Volvo XC40 Trunk Capacity

Like much else in the 2020 Volvo XC40 , the electrically lifting tailgate is optional, included in the Versality Pro package which also includes the backrests that are lowered by pressing a button, the 12 V socket and the three-part reclining platform (also vertically) , conceals a 10 cm high double bottom: it is a advisable expense, given that these are elements that increase the functionality of a rather large trunk (460/1336 liters), and whose only defect is the threshold far from the ground (75 cm ).

2020 Volvo XC40 Performance & Fuel Economy

Span longer than a compact sedan, the 2020 Volvo XC40 is not a fish out of water in the city; the gentle response of the engine and gearbox and the lightness of the steering are also suitable for driving in traffic. In the “back” they help the distance sensors, which are standard, while the front ones are paid separately (such as the camera with perimeter view and the semi-automatic parking system). The norm – also in consideration of the 1660 kg mass of the car – the 13.5 km/l of consumption noted.

The thrust of the engine is robust and the extension is not lacking, but the 2020 Volvo XC40 is not a sporty crossover: however agile and safe between the curves, it is pleasant especially if carried out in relaxation, enjoying the high comfort that is capable to offer. But after all the automatic gearbox, which is also capable of “velvety” and rapid couplings, is inconvenient to use in manual mode (there are no paddles on the steering wheel and the lever must be moved laterally). If you get up the pace, you should select the Dynamic mode, which makes the steering a little more solid, but the roll is felt. Fuel consumption is not bad: 17.5 km / l.

The ground light that is greater than that of most rivals (21.1 cm) does not cause fear of bumpy roads or snow-covered roads, especially if you equip the 2020 Volvo XC40 with M + S tires. Do not miss the driving mode, called Off Road, dedicated to the march out of the asphalt: it works up to 30 km / h always keeping the four-wheel drive engaged (otherwise, the system favors the front wheels), softening the engine supply , lightening the steering and enabling the speed limiter downhill.

On The Highway

The suspensions “smooth” the unevenness of the asphalt (but those with electronic control are optional), the car is stable and safe, and the engine almost does not feel: in terms of comfort, the 2020 Volvo XC40 has little to envy to the flagship. The demand for diesel at 130 km / h constant (13.3 km / l) is adequate for the remarkable performance of the 2.0 biturbo diesel, and at the level of standard driving aids can only be counted on lane maintenance: adaptive cruise control and sensors of the blind corner are in the expensive Safe Pro package.

Comfort. To be the envy of that of larger cars: the sound insulation and the response of the suspension to roughness are valid.

Engine. The turbodiesel is quite ready and brilliant. Moreover, it does not make its voice heard too much and is free of vibrations.

Safety. Automatic braking with pedestrian detection and other driving aids are standard, and the equipment can be further enhanced by drawing from the long list of options.

Space. There’s really a lot on board, despite the fact that the dimensions of the bodywork are relatively compact. The capacity of the trunk is also satisfactory.

Virtual controls. All functions are managed from the central display, but for some – such as those in the “climate” – physical commands would be preferable: they distract less.

Standard equipment. nsidering the price of the car, accessories like the navigator should be standard: instead they are paid separately, and they are not even cheap.

Gear lever. To manually select the gears, move it sideways: an unintuitive system that makes the absence of the steering wheel paddles (not provided) feel even more.

Loading threshold. As in other SUVs and crossovers, the trunk opening is far from the ground (75 cm): with heavy suitcases, trained arms are required.
