The 2020 Subaru Forester changes little in line but is based on a new platform and the 2.0 petrol is now combined with a small electric motor. Not always easy to find the controls on the dashboard.
2020 Subaru Forester Redesign – All New
On a small off-road track, and along an asphalt runway near Vienna, we could try out the Subaru Forester 2.0 e-Boxer. The car has just been presented at the Geneva Motor Show and is being approved, so many of the technical data have not yet been disclosed. This is the new generation of the Japanese SUV, built on the basis of the SGP (Subaru Global Platform, already used for the smaller Impreza and XV) and moved by a new mild hybrid system (light hybrid). The e-Boxer name derives from the coupling between a small electric motor with 16.7 horsepower and the four-cylinder 2.0 with direct injection of 150 hp petrol (with boxer architecture, opposed cylinders, like all the engines of the house). The new 2020 Subaru Forester (together with the XV) will be the first Subaru hybrid sold in Europe. From us, it will arrive at the end of 2019.
The innovations in terms of design are above all in the back (although the car is completely new). The front of the Subaru Forester 2.0 e-Boxer, in fact, follows the pattern of the old model, but is more muscular, with the larger and vertical mask. Behind, however, the tailgate and the bumper have elaborate traits, which give solidity, and the lights are horizontal (instead of vertical) and in the shape of “C”.
Change the interior a lot, which has a classic setting and a robust air. The plastics of the 2020 Subaru Forester 2.0 e-Boxer are pleasing and the assembly of the panels seemed precise. On the other hand, the small central screen above the dashboard (displaying the energy flows and the information on the off-road gear), which can be a source of distraction while driving, as well as the numerous buttons on the steering wheel and in the console. And the “climate” is rather low. The trunk is not small: the batteries under the load floor take away the spare wheel space, but they should not penalize too much the capacity of the compartment.
2020 Subaru Forester Performance
The road holding in the corners is good, the steering is precise and the suspensions absorb the roughness well, without being too soft. The 2.0 of the Subaru Forester 2.0 e-Boxer is regular, emits little vibration and does not make too much noise; the electric motor helps him in the filming, giving a little extra torque and helping to reduce fuel consumption. Below 80 km / h, and just touching the accelerator, if the accumulators are charged you can travel even more than a kilometer in electric mode. As in all the hybrids, the batteries recharge in decelerations, recovering energy. But not only: here, if you run under 40 km / h to “pile” discharged, the gasoline engine pushes the car and at the same time operates the generator, which in a few minutes makes the “full” of electrons. The CVT gearbox with continuous variation of the ratio, completely fluid in the responses, favors the comfort when you drive calmly, but when you press firmly the accelerator pedal makes the revolutions of the 2.0 (with consequent increase of the noise).
Excellent off-road performance, thanks to the considerable 22 cm minimum ground clearance and the proven permanent four-wheel drive, with the X-Mode system that allows you to vary the response of the engine, gearbox, brakes and transmission to move better on slippery bottoms, and which includes automatic speed control on steep descents. The contribution of the electric motor makes itself felt in the most difficult passages and in overcoming the obstacles from stationary: with charged batteries, the car has seemed a little more reactive.
2020 Subaru Forester Pricing
Equipped as standard on all versions of the new EyeSight driver assistance system, the Subaru Forester 2.0 e-Boxer can now count on two stereo cameras positioned behind the windshield. These ensure the operation of the adaptive cruise control (which in addition to maintaining the safety distance allows the car to slow down to stop and then start again alone), lane maintenance and automatic emergency braking if you risk buffering or to invest a pedestrian or a cyclist. Prices should start at around € 35,000.
