2020 Seat Tarraco Review: Comfortable on the Road | 2.0 TDI 4Drive DSG
The 2020 Seat Tarraco is the first 7-seat SUV of the Spanish house. It is well made, complete in equipment and comfortable. Whistles aside.
After witnessing the birth of his name, and having guided the camouflaged prototype in advance, it is time to try on the road the first big SUV of the Spanish house: the Seat Tarraco delivered to dealerships from next February, but already available (prices from 29.975 euros). Despite being designed in Barcelona, this car takes shape in the Volkswagen plants in Wolfsburg, a very rare event (the last Seat “made in Germany” was the Arosa, in production until 2004). The platform on which Tarraco was born is the MQB-A of the German group, the one with an extended wheelbase also used for the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and the Skoda Kodiaq.
2020 Seat Tarraco Dimensions
With the 2020 Seat Tarraco, The new stylistic language of the Spanish brand also debuts. Just look at her next to her “little sisters”, the Ateca and the Arona, to notice more gritty forms, but without excesses, given by the thin headlights and the pronounced mask. About headlights: they are full led as the standard for all versions, and have a new “signature” light. The LED technology was also used for the rear lights, joined by a thin red strip that enhances the width of the car: 184 cm. The length (474 cm), well disguised by a streamlined profile, is more than enough to allow the passenger compartment to comfortably accommodate five people with lots of luggage in tow.
And for 815 euros you can add two retractable seats in the trunk. In everyday use, the capacity of the storage compartments is also appreciated (the four in the doors also have the felt anti-noise base, while the one in the dashboard is cooled by the “climate” air), the three USB sockets and the wireless charging for smartphones. As mentioned, the trunk is large: a good 760 liters for the five-seater version, which can reach 1920 recline the two fractions of the sofa with practical levers in the trunk (in the case of seven seats, the capacities are 230, 700 and 1775 liters, respectively traveling in seven, five or two).
2020 Seat Tarraco Interior & Equipment
As well as wide, the cockpit of the new 2020 Seat Tarraco is well finished and above all, it has rich equipment. All three versions (Style, Business and Xcellence) offer as standard the trizona “climate”, the 8-inch screen of the multimedia system, which also includes the Seat Full Link, namely the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and the Shazam app to recognize a song from the first notes. And with the most advanced multimedia system (1,150 euros for Business and Style, 720 for Xcellence) there are also the commands to change the radio and the Seat Media Control application that includes Amazon Alexa. Returning to the basic equipment, the 10.3-inch digital dashboard is standard, obviously configurable. Surprising, however, having to pay (albeit not much, € 215) DAB digital radio. On the front of driver assistance systems, the so-called ADAS, there is no lack of automatic emergency braking, the anti-shock device and the maintenance in the lane. For the richer productions, there is also the semi-autonomous guide in the column.
Performance – Comfort on the road, Great off the Road
Four engines of the2020 Seat Tarraco, all turbocharged and with direct injection: petrol there are a 1.5 from 150 hp and a 2.0 from 190. Same powers for the two 2.0 turbodiesel. With less powerful than those with diesel, they can have the two-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission (mandatory choice for the 1.5 petrol) or the 4Drive all-wheel drive combined with the DSG 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This last configuration is standard for both 190 hp, petrol or turbodiesel variants. The model we drove is just a 2.0 TDI 4Drive DSG in the Xcellence setting, the richest: it offers, among other things, the 19 “wheels, the dark rear windows, the navigator, the keyless access system and the tailgate with “hands-free” opening.
Among the advisable options, the electronically controlled shock absorbers, which are appreciated in the curves when they are calibrated to the stiffer setting: that is automatically selected when choosing the most sporty driving mode, or can be entered by configuring the parameters (steering response, engine, Esp, “climate”) in the individual function. In the four-wheel drive versions, by rotating the wheel between the seats you can also choose the two specific modes for use on snow and dirt roads. The latter we tested in a short but challenging “gymkhana” to obstacles, in which we appreciated both the good ground clearance (20 cm) and the useful speed control in steep descents, in addition to the camera system with Camera 360 degrees.
In the road test, on the other hand, the good comfort of the 2020 Seat Tarraco emerged, with suspensions (electronic in our case) well calibrated, a motor with a fluid thrust, well supported by the 7-speed double clutch robotized gearbox, especially quick when driving ( unfortunately we can not have even for two-wheel drive versions). However, in speed, at around 120 km / h, there is some rustle from the rear-view mirrors. On the mixed car, the car does not lie too far to the side, and the steering is precise and progressive in response. As for Fuel consumption, after a hundred kilometers on hilly roads and motorways, the onboard computer indicated about 12.5 km/liter (the average approval figure is 17.9 km/liter).
2020 Seat Tarraco Pros & Cons
- Equipment. Even the basic equipment is very generous, even for what concerns the security systems
- Practicality. Many storage compartments. Also useful are the sliding sofa, the folding tables and the rear window blinds
- Space. The cockpit is really wide, and the trunk is not far behind. And for extra-long loads, you can recline the right-hand chair.
- Commands of the “climate”. They are in front of the gearbox, a bit ‘down, and are likely to distract
- At speeds around 120 km/h, you can hear the noise of the air against the mirrors
- Radio Dab . In such a well-equipped car, it is surprising to have to pay for digital radio
