2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Redesigned from top to bottom, the Jeep Wrangler confirms its great qualities in the off-road, and on the asphalt is more agile and precise. Ready, but not very silent, the new diesel engine.
The most classic of the Jeeps are all new, but still preserves the unmistakable look of the ancestors. In the Jeep Wrangler, we find many flat surfaces (the roof, the sides, and the windows), the wide mudguards separated by the bodywork, the round headlights (now also full led) and the front grille with seven vertical slits. There are also the folding windshield on the bonnet and the removable doors: just a few minutes to unscrew the support bolts (which are housed in the compartment under the bottom of the trunk) and you’re done.
The Jeep Wrangler is always proposed in two versions, the short two-door (433 cm from one bumper to the other) and the long one to four (the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 488 cm in total); they can be with a canvas roof or made up of removable panels. On sale from September 2018 starting from about € 48,000 (prices significantly higher than those of the old model), offers a useful safety device (monitoring the blind spot in the rear-view mirrors) but can not have automatic emergency braking. The Jeep Wrangler is available with two new engines: the 2.1 200-hp turbodiesels (the house calls it 2.2) and the 2.0 petrol turbo with 272 hp (which should be available from the beginning of 2018), both combined with the eight-speed automatic transmission.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4WD
Two are the four-wheel drive systems developed for the Jeep Wrangler. The simplest Command-Trac is reserved for Sport and Sahara outfits. Using the lever between the seats you can easily select the different modes of use. The 2H has only the rear wheels, while with the 4H Auto can be inserted up to 72 km / h, the system automatically distributes the traction between the two axles according to the grip conditions; in 4H Part-Time, however, this distribution is fixed at 50% (ideal in conditions of poor grip) and also allows the use 4L mode of the reduced gears.
The more refined Rock-Trac system instead equips the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, a version developed to give the best off-road: among other things, has the locking (via keys in the console) of the front and rear differentials, and the possibility to disconnect the front anti-roll bar, to give greater excursion to the wheels (thus avoiding the separation from the ground even on the most uneven surfaces).
The materials of good quality (soft plank plastic) and the refined details (one on all the profile of the first Jeep, the Willys MB, reproduced on the gear knob) make the interior of the Jeep Wrangler pleasant and personal; valid also the driving position, decidedly raised (this remains even when the seat is lowered to the maximum) and with the vertical steering wheel (now also adjustable in depth).
The sophisticated and intuitive multimedia system, which has a touch screen of 7 “or 8.4” to manage onboard services, and various possibilities for connections with smartphones (through the appropriate app and protocols Android Auto and Apple CarPlay ). It is also easy to read the instrumentation, which has a color display where you can recall a lot of information, including those useful for driving in the off-road (as the degrees of inclination of the vehicle compared to the ground).
The space of this 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is abundant for four, while a third person on the sofa is not comfortable. For an SUV of this type the capacity of the trunk is not bad, even if the large wheel arches reduce the width of the compartment; as before, the access includes a lower door hinged on the right side and the lifting rear window. In the passenger compartment, the equipment of the glove is just discreet and a refrigerated one is missing; great, however, the one under the armrest between the seats.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Test Drive
In asphalt driving, the progress of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2.2 diesel Sahara compared to the old model is evident, even if we are not at the level of modern SUVs. For a “hard and pure” off-road vehicle, ie with the chassis separated from the body and the rigid axles, the vehicle follows the set trajectory with good fidelity; this being said, the steering is not very direct and the wheels respond with a slight delay compared to when the steering wheel is turned.
Considering that the step (the distance between the center of the front wheels and the rear wheels) is 300 cm, agility does not disappoint. Effective coupling between the 2.1 diesel and automatic transmission. The first one is ready and moves a car that weighs over 2000 kg without load (probably the good time of 9.6 seconds for the “0-100” and the 180 km/h maximum speed), even if its “voice” it could be better soundproofed. The transmission is soft in the steps of relationship and fast enough; by moving the lever on the tunnel back and forth you can also manually enter the eight gears. As for consumption, in the test performed on mountain roads and on the highway the onboard computer detected about 9 km / l.
A Jeep Wrangler was created to overcome the most difficult obstacles, and so we also wanted to try on a stretch of off-road very challenging, with steep slopes, bumps, and deep holes. Once the central differential (4H Part-Time mode) has been blocked and the reduced gears have been inserted, our car (equipped with road tires) has moved without any difficulty, and with the minimum commitment on the part of the driver.
Also thanks to the considerable angles of attack, exit, and back (respectively 35.4, 30.7 and 20 degrees) and the high distance between the bottom of the car and the ground (24 cm); excellent ability to overcome fords (the house declares a limit of 76 cm). Finally, we point out that, even in the most difficult passages, we found few crunches: a sign that the frame with side members is not subject to torsion, and that it is validly connected to the bodywork.
