2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Specifications

Here is Our Test Report of The New 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid. The first hybrid Honda CR-V is snappy, comfortable and well equipped. Only by accelerating thoroughly becomes noisy.

A few months ago the new edition of the medium-large Honda CR-V SUV made its debut. After the 1.5 petrol turbo ( here the first contact), in February 2019 we will see in the dealerships perhaps the most interesting version for European: the hybrid HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), which in practice takes the place of the old model diesel ( there will be no more diesel-powered CR-Vs).

Identical in appearance (plates with the word Hybrid apart), this Hybrid Electric Vehicle maintains the powerful and modern forms and the great habitability of the model only on petrol, and loses only a little of the remarkable capacity of the trunk (497 liters instead of 561, because the floor is 8 cm higher because of the lithium-ion batteries underneath).

2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Interior & Equipment

The interior of the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Electric Vehicle changes slightly compared to the petrol-only version: instead of the shift lever there are buttons to select the forward and reverse gear, and the digital instrumentation includes an indicator of the required power or recovered, instead of the tachometer; remain the raised driving position, the remarkable practicality and the very accurate assemblages (but some plastics are subdued, and the multimedia system is not modern and effective). The prices of hybrid versions are higher than 4,000 euros compared to those of the 1.5 T petrol with manual transmission (which there are both front-wheel drive and 4×4), while for those automatic four-wheel drives (identical system) the surcharge is 1,300 EUR.

For the Hybrid Electric Vehicle we start from the 32.900 euros of the Comfort, which is already well equipped: “single-zone” climate “, 18” alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking, lane maintenance, blind spot sensors, electronic key, and full led headlights.

The front-wheel-drive Elegance Navi (36,000 euros) adds, among other things, the front and rear parking sensors, the “retro” camera, the multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and navigator and the re-sealable external mirrors electrically.

2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Specs

The hybrid system of the Honda CR-V Hybrid is “full”, ie with a powerful electric motor but without the possibility of charging from the outside via cable. A control unit manages moment by moment, in order to limit fuel consumption as much as possible, the contribution of the four main components: the 145 hp 2.0, the electric motor (184 hp), the power generator and the battery. There are three modes of operation.

  1. Electric (activated with the EV key). The current motor turns the wheels, receiving energy from the “pile” (which has a capacity of just over 1 kWh). 2.0 is off. Starting with a full charge, we have traveled almost 2 km at very low speeds (20-25 km / h) and a few hundred meters going to 50-60 km / h.
  2. Hybrid. Alternate short sections covered in EV with others in which the petrol unit drives the generator, which in turn feeds both the electric motor (which moves the car) and the battery. This is the most frequent mode of use and is activated when a good dose of power is required and the speed is under 80 km / h or over 120 km/h or is not constant.
  3. The mode in which the petrol engine is connected to the wheels by closing a clutch; the electric unit does not intervene. This mode of operation is reserved for when traveling between 80 and 120 km/h on the flat because at these regimes (between 1600 and 2400 rpm) and with this request for power the 2.0 makes the best. And therefore, instead of letting him move the generator, it’s better to use it directly.

Let’s take another couple of examples of operation in hybrid mode when it accelerates to the bottom. If the shooting lasts a few moments, the electric motor gives all its 184 horses to the wheels, consuming both the current produced by the generator moved by the 2.0 (which will provide the maximum for 130-135 hp, considering that the efficiency of the system is not 100%) and the one coming from the battery. If, however, the acceleration lasts a long time (as in the case of a long climb or when the maximum speed is sought), once the battery is discharged, the current comes from the generator powered by the petrol engine; enough because the electric unit gives about 130 Horsepower. In reality, it is a limit situation, almost impossible to replicate in normal driving. In fact, at every slowdown, the wheels drag the generator,

2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Test Drive & Fuel Economy

In this Hybrid version, the Honda CR-V adopts additional soundproofing panels and two systems that, by using the loudspeakers, dampen the most annoying noises (rustling and ruddiness) and “regularize” the rumble coming from the petrol engine. In practice, by adopting a not too aggressive guide, the Japanese SUV is silent, even on the motorway; the four-cylinder intervention is almost always inadvertent, and the gear is very fluid in every situation, even when the maximum is demanded. In this case, however, the revolutions of the 2.0 go to the stars and the noise can become annoying. The driving is pleasant, with direct and rapid steering and good cornering stability; accelerating to the bottom, the front wheels tend to lose grip, but the recovery of the correct trajectory takes place rapidly.

On the other hand, the 184 horses feel all and guarantee quick shots (realistic 8.8 seconds promised for the “0-100”, as well as the 180 peak times, which we have practically reached after a brief launch). As for comfort, it must be said that the suspensions have been stiffened, to compensate for the increase in weight compared to equivalent versions only on petrol (about 90 kg more). The result is a rather “dry” absorption of the uneven.

And consumption? Precise data will come out of a test with our electronic tools, which we intend to propose in one of the next issues at the te. For now, we can say that at the end of a mixed route we read in the dashboard over 16 km/liter. Value that seemed to us also reachable in traffic, but not on the highway: keeping the 130 hours, a value of 11-12 km / liter seems closer to reality.
