Even in this sporting outfit, the 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design T6 is above all safe and comfortable. The 310 bhp 2.0 petrol is very energetic, but the gearbox should be more responsive.
All new, the 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design T6 will arrive in Europe only in a year. This sedan is the first car of the Swedish house built in the United States, as well as the first without diesel engines for a few decades now. The choice is therefore between the four supercharged petrol cylinders and their hybrid versions.
The latter is also at the base of the more sporty versions, called Polestar Engineered: the first contact of the T5 from 405 hp you will find it on the flyon newsstands from November 10th. Based on the platform of the S90, XC90 and XC60, the S60 incorporates the technical solutions: transverse engine, front or front wheel drive (as in the case of the driven car), deformable quadrilateral suspensions in front and multilink rear, with a crossbow in composite material which takes the place of the classic springs at the rear end (takes up less space in height).
Unlike the V60 wagon version ( here the driving impressions) on the S60, electronically controlled shock absorbers are not offered: on average, less than 5% of the customers choose them, and they would have reduced the trunk for all Volvo S60s.

As with other recent Volvo cars, the interior of the Volvo S60it’s a nice place to stay, although in the R-Design (with a sportier look and with more precise steering-oriented suspension than with comfort), you can only have black upholstery: they lose a lot of brightness compared to those clear available for other versions.
Not even for tools and commands, which are almost always easy to use. The fully digital dashboard automatically brings to the fore the most relevant information of the moment (like the map of the navigator near the turns), but it is not configurable and varies only in graphics and little else passing from one driving mode to the other. The steering wheel has few and big keys, one of which activates the semi-autonomous driving system on the highway, called Pilot Assist.
Lights and shadows for the multimedia system: the 9 ” screen is vertically developed (thus allowing you to have multiple overlapping features at the same time, like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and the radio or the navigator) and you “browse” like a tablet, but it lacks that immediacy of response that we have found on its most recent competitors, and it is slow to load the functions at the start of the car. For this reason, as well as to speed up the development of onboard apps, in 2020 the current Windows-based system will be abandoned in favor of a new platform with a “heart” Android, developed by the same house. It is not clear, however, whether he will find a seat on the Volvo S60 before its restyling expected in 2023; on the same occasion, wireless charging for compatible mobile phones, absent on the S60, should also arrive.
The roof profile gives the Volvo S60 an almost coupe-like line, but it also causes poor accessibility to the sofa: when you enter and exit, you need to lower your head a lot. Not bad, however, the height: only those who are taller than 190 cm touch the ceiling with the head. If space for knees abounds, as on many rivals the central place is sacrificed: the seat is raised and the tunnel on the floor is voluminous. Wide and adjust the loading mouth, which gives access to a square compartment and practical retractable hooks under the parcel shelf, to hold bags and bags. There is also no opening through the sensor under the bumper of the trunk: just pass in front of the foot and the lid snaps up, thanks to the springs.
Safety Features; No Doubt
Although the rivals have shortened the distance with the latest Volvo, this S60 boasts excellent safety features: the standard automatic emergency braking also recognizes pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, as well as the traffic that comes in the opposite direction (even at low speed at intersections and in reverse).
All the S60 have then and control the driver’s tiredness, assistance in avoiding obstacles (the electronics intervene on the brakes of one side of the car to make it turn). Optional, however, the blind spot control of the mirrors and the Pilot Assist: on the highway, adaptive cruise control, and lane maintenance work together to follow the car traffic flow (you still have to keep your hands on the steering wheel, and the responsibility remains of the driver).
The system, although not free from defects of “reading” of the road, has been refined in the software: in our test, the car did not “bounce” between the lines drawn on the asphalt, as it happened with the Volvo of a few years does.

If the R-Design car set-up is designed for those looking for a certain driving pleasure, do not think that the Volvo S60 “betrays” its nature as a comfortable car: the soundproofing is very accurate and, even with the optional wheels 235/40 R 19, the absorption of the roughness of the bottom is never abrupt.
Thanks to its volumetric compressor that works from the idle speed up to 3000 rpm, to then disconnect and leave space to the turbo, the 2 liters has a thrust always ready and decisive: more than its absence of “voice” make you think. In Dynamic mode, then, the Haldex central joint of the four-wheel drive is preloaded, so as to transmit power more quickly to the rear wheels, while the torque converter automatic transmission favors low gears.
Even so, however, remains unreactive in climbing (you need to press the right pedal a lot, and then wait a while) and the situation improves slightly using the steering wheel paddles (an exclusive of R-Design): from a sports version, we would like more. Convincing cornering behavior: the car tilts slightly and follows the set trajectory faithfully, even in spite of the steering wheel that does not shine for precision when driving with the “knife between the teeth”. More than strong emotions, therefore, the 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design T6 ensures the ability to keep medium-high in safety and with very little effort.
