Grown 20 centimeters compared to the previous edition, the 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper D ALL4 becomes more spacious and offers a good load capacity (oscillates between 450 and 566 liters by sliding the couch, and passes to 1390 Reclinandolo). The cockpit shows a high level of care for the details and, of the bodywork, a personal and modern style. But it is mainly for the driving that this crossover is fulfilling: The road seal is remarkable (even because of the rigid trim) and the precise steering. The latter, however, is not very light: it is known in maneuver and in the guide at low speed. Brilliant the two thousand 150 horsepower turbo-diesel; In this version is combined with an automatic eight-speed gearbox, fast enough but not lightning (and in this case, you can not even order the sport, faster and with the paddles at the wheel for manual selection of gears).
Although more cumbersome than the previous model, the 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper D ALL4 remains an agile and fun crossover to drive. The captivating shapes combine delicious details, but they are paid apart: it is the case of mirrors that project the Mini logo on the asphalt when you open the car with the remote control or the backlit dashboard. Among the extras there are also the mats and Dab radio: in a car so sophisticated and modern you would expect to have them as standard… The absence (also among the optional) of safety systems such as the system against voluntary lane exits and the sensors for the blind corner of the mirrors. These shortcomings have made the car only 51 points on 100 in the Euro NCAP assessment of the driving assistance systems, but in the crash tests carried out in the same session (in 2017) the English crossover scored the highest score. Among the engines, the 2.0 turbo diesel 150 CV is for sure what best combines performance and consumption: However, it is a pity not to be able to match the automatic gearbox, reserved for the SD (in addition to the “S” gasoline) that of horses has 190. For the rest, the 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper D ALL4 is able to satisfy even the most fine palates in sports driving: The road seal is high, and the steering precise (but a little heavy). The bill to be paid is some hopping on the bumpy due to the rigid suspension.
2018 Mini Countryman Cooper D ALL4 Interior and Trunk Space
Dashboard and controls. Made with soft plastics to the touch (rigid and subject to scratches only the coating at the base of the gearbox), the plank is unmistakably Mini, with the traditional circular elements: from the controls on the spokes of the steering wheel, to the instrumentation. The only exception is the air vents, now shaped like a rectangle with rounded vertices, while on the old model were circular. At the base of the console there are five rocker levers (also referring to the Mini tradition): The central one starts and turns off the engine. Useful the head-up display (on request) that projects on a slide above the steering wheel useful information, such as the speed and indications of the navigator, reducing the distraction to the guide.
Dimension. The length increase of the Mini Countryman and, above all, step (the distance between the front wheels and the rear ones grew by 7 cm) led to more space for the rear passengers. It only suffers those who are at the center of the sofa (slide of 13 cm, and with the backrest divided into three parts 40/20/40): The tunnel on the floor is cumbersome, like the vents of the “climate”.
Trunk. The luggage compartment is well finished, and all in all ample. Sliding forward the sofa, the capacity grows from 450 liters to 566, without giving up any of the seats for the passengers. Traveling in two, instead, you get to 1390 liters. Pity only that the loading plan, which hides a large bottom, cannot be lowered: in this way you could overlap even two big suitcases, operation instead impossible if not removing the cap (the distance between the latter and the plane is of 46 cm).
Test Drive, Gas Milege
In the city. The (many) centimeters more than the old model do not embarrass the Mini Countryman in traffic: Indeed, the third window above the trunk is wider and improves the view of three quarters back. The sprint at the traffic light is good, and consumption is not exaggerated (13.9 km/litre detected). Comfortable gearbox, while suspensions are stiff and heavy steering, in all driving modes.
Out of town. The tightness of the road and the precision of the steering are almost from sport sedan: On the mixed this crossover is fun, and the ESP (unpluggable at multiple levels) rarely intervenes. Lively the 2.0 turbo diesel (which in the quiet driving is not even too thirsty with 17.9 km litre actual); The brakes are powerful, while the automatic gearbox is not the fastest.
On the highway. At 130 km/h the consumption of the 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper D ALL4 is only discrete (14.3 km/litre detected). On the other hand, the engine makes little sense of its “voice” (at 130 km/h in octave works at 2000 laps), and it feels just some rustle and a bit of rolling noise of the tires on the most grainy asphalt. Ultimately, you travel relaxed, also thanks to the elevated driving position: Pity only for some wince of too much on the changes of asphalt or in the presence of depressions.
Out of the way. The Mini Countryman is certainly not voted on the “hard” off-road: the height from the ground is just 16.5 cm. On the other hand, the bumpers protrude little compared to the wheels: rare to creep in the attack or the exit of the steep slopes. On slippery funds emerges the effective full traction, while the original application Mini Country Timer (is part of the Wired package) gives the statistics of the use in off-road: Indicates the kilometres travelled and the degree of difficulty reached, up to reach the “Cliff Champ” level (climbing champion).
